VIDEO/PHOTOS: One person was hurt while escaping a home on fire in Normal on Wednesday afternoon. The Normal Fire Department was called to an East Virginia Avenue home around 5:30 p.m. and arrived minutes later to heavy smoke. The home is near Camelback Bridge on the north side of Virginia Ave.
The one person inside the house escaped before firefighters arrived, but was injured in the process. They were treated on the scene and taken to the hospital, but the injuries aren’t believed to be serious. “If a fire like this had occurred while the occupant was sleeping, the outcome could have been deadly,” NFD Public Information Officer Matt Swaney said. NFD called in off-duty firefighters and the Bloomington Fire Department’s Rapid Intervention Team to put out the fire. Flames were in the living spaces and attic.
