Man and dog safely rescued from steep ravine in East Peoria

A dog was rescued thanks to crews with the East Peoria Fire Department. At 2:34 p.m. on Aug. 26, crews went to 20 Apple Tree Ln. for a service call involving a dog trapped in a ravine along with a person who was trying to help, EPFD assistant chief Grant Hangartner said.

He said arriving crews saw that the wall of the ravine was not walkable and called for assistance. The man had jumped into the ravine onto a pile of brush to rescue the dog, the assistant chief said. The canine was approximately 50 feet down the ravine and weighed roughly 120 pounds. Hangartner said the man was with the dog but couldnโ€™t get the hound or himself out due to the steep walls. He said the owner said the dog had been missing for two to three days. Two firefighters were lowered along with a basket to bring both the man and the dog up. Hangartner said both were brought up safely and were uninjured.
