The City of Champaign Fire Department announced the off-duty passing of Firefighter Trace Conover on July 9, 2025. Conover, who was 28 years old, had served the community for over three and a half years. Conover was a dedicated member of the Champaign Firefighters Benevolent Fund board, an organization committed to honoring and supporting fellow firefighters and local community groups. He had also recently joined the CFD Peer Support Team.
