Accidental house fire in Bloomington causes $25K in damages

Improper disposal of ashes and embers appears to have caused a house fire Sunday that led to $25,000 in damages. Crews with the Bloomington Fire Department were called at 8:52 a.m., Sunday to the 3000 block of Rusty Lane on a report of a house fire, said Capt. Frank Friend.

When firefighters arrived, they saw a fire in a garbage can had started to spread to the outside of a two-story house, he said. Friend said that the fire was quickly extinguished using less than 200 gallons of water. After using thermal imaging and drilling holes in the drywall, crews learned the fire had been contained to the outside of the home and did not spread into the attic, he said. The fire was ruled as an accident and was attributed to the improper disposal of ashes and ember, he said.
