VIDEO: Firefighters rescued nine people and a dog from an apartment fire in Champaign on Sunday. The fire broke out just after 4 p.m. at an apartment located on High View Court in Champaign.
Randy Smith, โPublic Information Officer with the Champaign Fire Department, said firefighters noted heavy smoke while on the way โ and they upgraded the fire to a second alarm.
Firefighters reported heavy fire from both a second and third floor balcony. Most of the residents were rescued from their balconies, but firefighters had to enter the apartment building to save one person and a dog. One person was treated at the scene and brought to the hospital for further evaluation. No firefighters were injured.
Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire, Smith said. Now, fire officials are working to figure how the fire started. The Urbana Fire Department also responded to the second alarm fire.
