‘Tomorrow, I shall go into battle’: Man who shot three firefighters in Kootenai County left drawings, goodbye letter to his father

VIDEO: The man who shot and killed two North Idaho firefighters and injured another in a planned ambush attack left several drawings depicting the scene and a goodbye letter to his father. The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference on Tuesday to provide the most up-to-date information on the investigation into the June 29 ambush on Canfield Mountain. Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris shared that the investigation is still active. A roughly nine-minute video created by the sheriff’s office outlined the timeline of the incident as well as evidence that has been gathered about the shooter, who was later identified as 20-year-old Wess Roley.

The video showed that investigators found several drawings in Roley’s Coeur d’Alene apartment of what authorities interpret to be the scene on Canfield Mountain. Authorities also found drawings of what appear to be Roley depicting himself dying during the incident, with one drawing reading “Goodbye Wess.” Investigators also found a goodbye letter written by the suspect addressed to his father in his car at the scene on Canfield Mountain.

The letter reads as follows: “Hello Father, I write this to you in a concerned effort that you may read this is upmost sincerity. Tomorrow, I shall go into battle. If I survive, it would be with upmost dishonor. I bid thee farewell, I hope that you shall live to the fullest extent as you have thus far. I beg that you do not fall into the traps of modern existence, with media and other false pleasantries that plague the mind of individuals today. Propaganda of sorts. You are an upstanding individual and I wish you the best. Sincerely, Wess Roley.”
