Fire crews tackle Hatwai Fire burning near Lewiston

VIDEO: The Hatwai Fire is burning about 250 acres just northeast of Lewiston. According to the Idaho Department of Lands (IDL), the fire broke out on Saturday near Hatwai Road and 42nd Street North. As of Sunday, Nez Perce County Fire said the fire had burned 250 acres and the fire is about 75% contained. IDL says the fire destroyed one structure and Asotin County Fire District 1 said many homes were threatened and crews evacuated nearby neighborhoods.

Idaho State Police (ISP) said the fire burned rapidly on Saturday, with strong winds pushing the flames to the north and northeast. The fire closed Hatwai Road between 36th Street North and Central Grade. Nez Perce County Fire says no injuries were reported and all evacuations have been lifted. IDL says there were 40-50 personnel fighting the fire with 8 engines and one water tender. Resources have since been reduced to five engines. The cause of the fire is unknown.
