Series of suspicious same-shaped brush fires under investigation in Kona

Several suspicious brush fires โ€” all 10-foot-10 in size โ€” are under investigation by Hawaiโ€˜i Island police after they were seen just after 8 a.m. Oct. 23 along Queen Kaโ€˜ahumanu Highway, between the intersection of Hulikoa Drive and Hina Lani Street, in Kailua-Kona. At least 8 of the weirdly and specifically same-shaped blazes were reported and observed in the area.

Passing motorists stopped to help put out the flames, with remaining fires and hot spots quickly extinguished with the arrival of responding police and Hawaiโ€˜i Fire Department personnel. No property damages or injuries were reported. The fires also did not pose a threat to nearby businesses or residences. A cause for the blazes has not been determined.

โ€œPolice are on heightened alert in light of the current red flag warning from the National Weather Service,โ€ said Hawaiโ€˜i Police Department Area II Operations Maj. Thomas Shopay III in a police press release about the incident. โ€œWe ask the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.โ€
