Electric scooter sparks fire at multi-unit building in Honolulu

VIDEO: The Honolulu Fire Department is warning residents about lithium-ion battery safety after an electric scooter fire seriously injured a woman in Kalihi Friday. HFD was called to the scene of a building fire on Haka Drive at 6:20 p.m. They arrived shortly after and found the multi-unit residential building encased in smoke. Fire crews secured a water supply, found an e-scooter on fire, and extinguished it. HFD said a woman with first- and second-degree burns to her face and hair was found nearby and had difficulty breathing due to smoke inhalation. Firefighters provided basic life support treatment. Patient care was transferred to the Honolulu Emergency Medical Services at 6:35 p.m. The 73-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital in serious condition. HFD warns that lithium-ion batteries can catch fire or explode if not used correctly or if they are damaged. These batteries supply power to devices like laptops, e-scooters and e-bikes, smoke alarms, toys, and cars.
