Baldwin County achieves milestone with fully staffed fire stations

VIDEO: A big day for fire safety happened in the Central Georgia community this week when the last volunteer fire station in Baldwin County became fully staffed with professional firefighters. The Meriwether Fire Station, also known as Station 6, is now staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This completes a process that took decades to finish, changing Baldwin County from a mostly volunteer fire department to one with full-time staff at every station. “I’m very glad to be able to finally get this done,” said Fire Chief Phil Adams. “We’ll be getting the trucks out of here a little bit quicker now. Our volunteers are a good group, but this was the last station that needed to be fully manned in the county.” One person who came to celebrate was 98-year-old Al Haslam. He’s pretty special to Station 6 because he was part of the very first group of volunteer firefighters there when it opened.
