VIDEO: A Macon-Bibb Fire Department fire truck flipped in downtown Macon Wednesday afternoon. It happened on Wednesday near the College Street post office, just past the College Street and Hardman Street intersection. Macon-Bibb Fire Engine 2 was lying on its side.
A small crew was on their way to a fire alarm call at 452 Second Street, which was identified as a false alarm, according to Fire Chief Shane Edwards. The three firefighters inside the truck at the time of the accident were taken to Atrium Health Navicent for minor injuries. “The main focus we’re concerned about right now is the firefighters that were on the apparatus, making sure they’re okay,” Edwards said. “This station will have a reserved apparatus on duty this evening, so the territory we’re in will still be covered.”
All three firefighters returned home by 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday after receiving treatment, according to county officials. Macon-Bibb Fire crews were working to take equipment off the engine as the firetruck lay on its side. Firefighters unspooled the vehicle’s fire hose onto College Street. Both paramedics and the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash. College Street reopened around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday night after being partially blocked by emergency vehicles. Edwards says the crash is under investigation.
