Cape Coral police warn drivers ‘blocking the box’ delays first responders

VIDEO: Drivers in Cape Coral are growing increasingly frustrated with the traffic issue. Cape Coral police said they have noticed an increase in drivers affecting the roads by blocking the box. โ€œIt gets worse and worse every day. It feels like,โ€ said Jaiden Nesnital of Buckingham, who regularly commutes through Cape Coral. โ€œIf you’re just sitting there doing nothing and blocking the intersection, you know, try to move out the way.โ€ Blocking the box refers to when a vehicle enters an intersection without enough space to completely clear it โ€” often during a red light or while traffic is backed up โ€” effectively trapping the vehicle in the middle of the crossing. That creates gridlock and, according to police, can delay emergency services.

โ€œThey’re just trying to rush because they just want to be where they want to get,โ€ said Aiden Reaville of Cape Coral. โ€œBut you canโ€™t barely get anywhere in Cape Coral.โ€ The Cape Coral Police Department said drivers blocking the box in areas like Pine Island Road and Pondella Road, which see high volumes of daily traffic, but the impact of blocking the box extends beyond commuter inconvenience โ€” it poses real danger to first responders. โ€œIt delays everything,โ€ said Lt. Jason Spinner of the Cape Coral Fire Department. Spinner, a firefighter for over a decade, recalls a structure fire call that ended with his emergency vehicle involved in a crash.

โ€œWe had to have another police officer stop โ€” not go to the fire โ€” and come back and help fill out accident paperwork,โ€ Spinner said. โ€œWe were thankful that nobody was hurt, but once again, it stops the initial response.โ€ He emphasized the risk: โ€œYou don’t want to cause a secondary accident that we would have to stop and respond [to].โ€ Blocking the box is a traffic violation under Florida law, and violators can be ticketed. But officers and fire officials agree โ€” enforcement isnโ€™t enough. Theyโ€™re calling on drivers to think before they enter an intersection.
