Tractor-trailer overturns on I-295 in DC, leaks 100 gallons of diesel fuel

Officials said no one was hurt after a tractor-trailer overturned on Interstate 295 in D.C. causing gallons of fuel to leak across the highway Monday night. Details are limited; however, the DC Fire and EMS Department (DCFD) posted on X around 10:30 p.m. that crews were on the scene of a crash on I-295 North at Benning Road Northeast. There, a tractor-trailer had overturned on its side, and about 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the highway from saddle tanks, according to the DCFD. Officials said two people were in the truck during the collision, but were able to exit without any injuries. The impact of the collision sent debris flying onto the CSX tracks, and wires fell in the area. All rail traffic was briefly halted on Monday night as first responders worked on the scene. Hazmat crews remained on the highway for more than an hour to clean up the spill, and the crash was cleared by midnight.
