The New Canaan Fire Department announced Monday four members of the department have successfully completed intensive swift water rescue technician training as part of the enhancement of the departmentโs rescue capabilities.
In a news release provided by the department, Fire Chief Albe Bassett said the four-day course was conducted in extremely challenging conditions, including fast-moving Class IV rapids. The training included hands-on in-water swimming rescues, boat operations in swift currents and vehicle in water rescue scenarios, according to Bassett. The completion of this training and the acquisition of specialized equipment has allowed the department to meet the needs of today’s rescue situations, Bassett said.
According to Bassett, New Canaan has experienced periods of heavy rainfall, which has caused severe flooding of homes and roadways. The speed that the flooding occurs has resulted in residents being trapped in their homes or vehicles, according to Bassett. Having properly trained members and the correct equipment within the department allows them to respond swiftly and effectively to water rescue emergencies, Bassett said.
