Two people, two pets dead in Grand Junction house fire

Two people were killed in a house fire on Gunnison Avenue in Grand Junction on Wednesday, according to the Grand Junction Fire Department. Firefighters said that they were dispatched to a home on the 1100 block of Gunnison Avenue at 9:46 a.m. after callers reported smoke and flames emitting from the windows of a two-story home.

Firefighters evacuated two people from inside the home for immediate medical attention before they were taken to a hospital. Officials said both died from life-threatening injuries sustained in the fire. A dog and a cat were also killed by the fire. The two dead will be identified by the Mesa County Coronerโ€™s Office once next-of-kin are notified, officials said.

KJCT News 8 reporters in the field witnessed what appeared to be state fire investigators in the area. The fire was successfully extinguished and the building searched for additional victims. Officials said that none were found. The origin and cause of the fire are being actively investigated by officials.
