A building was evacuated after a vehicle hit a townhouse and created a natural gas leak Wednesday morning, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.
Police said the driver was going southbound on Chelton Drive when it crossed through the intersection of Hancock Expressway, left the roadway and hit the side of a townhouse on Bridgewater Drive. The vehicle struck the gas meter of the building, causing a natural gas leak, police said. The townhouse was evacuated, and police said the surrounding townhomes were notified but not evacuated. There was no danger to the public, according to police.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department reportedly responded to the scene. Fire officials said the gas line has been clamped, and crews monitored gas levels in the affected units. Colorado Springs Utilities was also on the scene, monitoring and preparing to repair the gas line. The occupants of the townhouse will be temporarily displaced while repairs are made. Police said drugs, alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash. There were no injuries reported.
