Napa County declares local emergency as Pickett Fire 13% contained

VIDEO: The County of Napa declared a local emergency Sunday in response to the Pickett Fire burning in the Calistoga area. On Monday, an air quality advisory was extended through Wednesday. Napa County Chief Executive Officer and Director of Emergency Services Ryan Alsop signed the emergency proclamation Sunday to request additional funding for the fire. The Pickett Fire, the declaration states, now presents โ€œconditions of extreme peril to life, safety and property.โ€

โ€œThe safety of our residents is our top priority,โ€ Alsop said in a statement Sunday. โ€œThis declaration is a proactive step to ensure we can mobilize every available resource to respond to the needs of our community, including coordinating with state and federal partners.โ€

In an update Monday morning, officials said the fire is 6,803 acres and 13% contained. Firefighters are actively working to protect homes in the area, Cal Fire said. No homes have been destroyed or damaged by the fire. There are no known injuries or deaths related to the fire.

On Monday, the Bay Area Air District announced that an air quality advisory that was set to expire has been extended into Wednesday due to wildfire smoke from the Pickett Fire. The smoke is expected to impact Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties, according to the Air District.

โ€œIf possible, and temperatures allow stay inside with windows and doors closed until smoke levels subside,โ€ BAAD wrote in an advisory. โ€œResidents can also reduce their exposure to smoke by setting their car vent systems to re-circulate to prevent outside air from moving inside. The use of indoor air filtration or going to a Clean Air Center or other location with filtered air, such as a library or mall, can also help reduce smoke exposure.โ€
