Crash sparks 104-acre brush fire that forced evacuations near SR-78 in Ramona

VIDEO: Officials said all evacuation warnings had been lifted after firefighters gained the upper hand on a brush fire that sparked in Ramona on Thursday afternoon. A rollover crash sparked the fire near State Route 78 west of Casner Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. The fire was spreading at a moderate rate and burned 5-10 acres by 1:50 p.m., Cal Fire San Diego said. Two hours later, that total had crested 104 acres, with the spread of the fire halted.

Firefighters attacked the blaze with multiple firefighting aircraft, which were retrieving water from as far as Diamond Valley Lake near Winchester and dumping pink fire retardant on the blaze to prevent its spread. By 2:30 p.m., the blaze was 15% contained. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department issued evacuation orders and warnings for areas north of state Route 78 near Rancho Ballena Road. Those orders and warnings were lifted at about 4:30 p.m.
