Agencies practice high-risk rescue techniques in joint training at Chico State

VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Chico Fire Department, in collaboration with the Butte County Interagency Rescue Group (BIRG), conducted a “High-Angle Victim Rescue” training exercise on Monday at Chico State. The exercise took place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and involved responders simulating victim rescues by rappelling from the upper floors and roof of Whitney Hall. Chico Fire officials said the training simulated a “pick-off rescue,” where rescuers help a victim stranded on the side of a building, such as a window washer. The BIRG includes members from the Chico Fire Department, Butte County Sheriff Search and Rescue, and Cal Fire. Officials said all BIRG personnel train together, and by training together, they build their relationship and maintain their skill set.
