Firefighters gain upper hand on 24-acre Sandia Fire in North County

VIDEO: Firefighters were able to contain a brush fire that sparked Tuesday afternoon in the North County community of De Luz. The Sandia Fire was burning on Sandia Creek Road, west of Doville Ranch Road and Lynda Lane, in “a remote area with difficult access” just south of Riverside County.

Updates offered shortly after 5 p.m. offered conflicting pictures of efforts to fight the fire: Evacuation warnings were issued at 5:22 for Zones SDC-0022 & SDC-0023 on the Genasys Evacuation Map, but 10 minutes later, officials said a very large air tanker had been released by authorities coordinating the air attack.

Good news came, though, about an hour later, when officials lifted those evacuation warnings and released all the air tankers that had been assigned. By 7 p.m., firefighters had stopped the spread of the fire. By Wednesday morning, Cal Fire San Diego said the fire was 35% contained and had two strike teams working to increase containment throughout the day.
