1 dead, 2 rescued after car gets swept away in southern Arizona wash

A woman died after a running wash swept a car off a roadway in southern Arizona Friday night. Around 9:30 p.m., a woman dialed 911 to report she was caught in a flash flood and her vehicle was sinking in the water, according to the Cochise County Sheriffโ€™s Office Search and Rescue (CCSO SAR) team.

When deputies arrived in the desert area near Benson, close to Ocotillo Road and north of Interstate 10, they found a man getting swept away into a different wash and rescued him. Other first responders later found the woman dead several feet from her car, which was mostly submerged in the running water.

A second person was rescued, according to CCSO, but no further details on their status were released. The incident remains under investigation. Cochise County Sheriffโ€™s Office urges drivers to be careful when driving around muddy areas and washes.
