Wildfire mitigation project to start in Anchorage’s Hillside area

A critical wildfire mitigation project is set to begin next week in Anchorage, aiming to reduce fire risks in the Hillside area.

The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DOF), in partnership with the Anchorage Fire Department (AFD), will start work on the East-West Connector shaded fuel break on May 5.

The project will create a 200-foot-wide fuel break extending from Hilltop Ski Area Road to Prospect Drive, aimed at protecting both life and property from the threat of wildfires. By removing dense vegetation and thinning areas of land, the project will create a buffer zone to slow or stop the spread of wildfires into residential areas.

Chief Jon Glover of the Anchorage Fire Department’s Wildfire Division emphasizes the importance of this collaboration, calling it a “commitment to proactive wildfire mitigation and public safety,” benefiting both residents and the broader Anchorage community.
