Fire department in Madison County sees major increase in volunteers, aims for more

VIDEO: A volunteer fire department that was once struggling to keep enough crew members has recently seen a dramatic turnaround. Just a few years ago, things were looking bleak for Moores Mill Volunteer Fire Department. Its former president and current spokesperson, Zachary Trulson, says the department was losing volunteers left and right until just 20 firefighters remained. Mooreโ€™s Millโ€™s call volume is one of the highest in Madison County, and that created compounding problems: the firefighters who stayed were getting burnt out. โ€œHaving those lower numbers led to even more people leaving the service, because not only were they running calls over and over and felt like they were the only ones putting in that effort,โ€ Trulson said, โ€œbut also, they would have to go into a fire, theyโ€™d get maybe three minutes of downtime, and then have to go back inside of the fire as soon as their bottle gets changed out, which is just not a safe situation for them to be in.โ€ Since then, Moores Mill VFD has nearly doubled its volunteers, with 38 firefighters on the roster.ย
