Alabama sees decline in fire-related fatalities, but prevention remains crucial

Alabama has experienced a significant decrease in fire-related fatalities over the past year, according to the Alabama State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office. The state reported 68 fire fatalities in 2024, down from 84 in 2023 and 91 in 2022.

While these numbers may fluctuate slightly as investigations continue, the downward trend is seen as a positive sign that prevention efforts are effective. Despite the progress, fire safety officials like Fultondale Fire Chief Justin McKenzie emphasize that even one fire-related death is too many.

The Alabama State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office and fire chiefs across the state highlight three common factors in fatal home fires: the absence of working smoke alarms, unsafe heating practices, and unattended cooking incidents. To combat these issues, officials recommend installing and maintaining smoke alarms in every bedroom, hallway, and on each level of the home.
