Survivor of Green River explosion recalls ‘insane’ experience as tunnel prepares to reopen

VIDEO: A survivor of the Green River tunnel explosion spoke out after the announcement that the westbound I-80 tunnel is preparing to reopen. The fiery 26-vehicle crash claimed three lives and injured 18 others on Feb. 14, triggering months of investigations, lawsuits, and extensive structural repairs. The Wyoming Highway Patrol said the tunnel is expected to fully reopen to traffic by the end of November โ€” but with restrictions on oversized loads.

The National Transportation Safety Board determined the crash began when a pickup truck spun out on wet and icy roads just outside the tunnel exit. A semi-truck swerved to avoid the vehicle, causing a chain reaction crash that involved over two dozen vehicles, including multiple commercial trucks.

For survivor Andrea Domhoff, the memory of that night remains vivid. โ€œI had gone through those tunnels my entire life, so to have that happen just one random Friday night,โ€ she said, pausing mid-thought with a gesture. โ€œIt was just insane, and it was scary. Once I was out, it was like, ‘Did that just happen? And Iโ€™ve processed quite a bit of it.โ€ Domhoff credits a truck driver with saving her life. โ€œAs I was trying to get out of my car, he was beating on my door, and he yelled at the end of the tunnel that โ€˜Youโ€™re not going to be able to see me, but youโ€™ll be able to hear me, so I just need you to follow my voice.โ€™ And I couldnโ€™t see anything. I could see nothing. I mean that was the darkest dark Iโ€™ve have ever seen in my entire life,โ€ she said.
