Wind-fueled fire damages West Milwaukee grocery store, forces food disposal

VIDEO: Windy conditions are getting the blame for a smoky fire that damaged a West Milwaukee grocery store Tuesday. The Milwaukee Fire Department responded to an initial report of a dumpster fire around 11 a.m. at the Pick โ€˜n Save store on Miller Parkway near Lincoln Avenue. When fire crews arrived, they found the fire had spread from the dumpster to cardboard and plastic crates and the flames were being forced towards the building because of strong westerly winds, forcing the evacuation of the store. The flames spread high enough to damage the roof, which is more than two stories high. “We realized with the wind working against us and the amount of fuel load at the rear of the store we called for a second alarm assignment to bring additional resources in,” Deputy Fire Chief Ron Firnrohr said.
