Viroqua Fire Department opens new $9.5 million station with expanded facilities

The Viroqua Fire Department celebrated a major milestone Thursday with the ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new $9.5 million fire station, marking a significant upgrade in the department’s capabilities and facilities. The new station represents a substantial improvement over the previous facility, with officials noting it is approximately twice the size of the old building.

This expansion addresses long-standing operational challenges that firefighters faced in the cramped quarters of their former station. One of the most significant improvements is the expanded garage space, which now allows each fire truck to have its own dedicated door.

“New safety features, just the fact we have room to move around. We now have room for all our apparatus so we’re not pulling a couple trucks out to get to the truck we need to respond,” said Fire Chief Chad Buros. The new facility also includes state-of-the-art training facilities located on-site.

These training areas will serve a dual purpose, providing enhanced preparation opportunities for Viroqua firefighters while also supporting the educational mission of Western Technical College students studying fire science and related fields.
