Students evacuated from UW-Eau Claire campus building as fire breaks out

VIDEO: Students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire were evacuated from a campus building after a fire broke out Thursday morning. According to a press release from the Eau Claire Fire Department, on Thursday, Oct. 23, at around 9:40 a.m., the Eau Claire Fire Department responded to 1702 Park Avenue (Schneider Hall) for a fire alarm going off.

Crews entered the building and saw smoke throughout the occupied building. The press release says UWEC maintenance personnel shut down the power to Schneider Hall, as well as the Flesch Family Welcome Center.

According to the press release, the UWEC Police Department rescued two people from stuck elevators, one in Schneider Hall and one in the Flesch Family Welcome Center. Eau Claire Fire Department crews found and extinguished the fire in an electrical transformer room.

Authorities evacuated everyone from the building, searched all floors of the building, and ventilated multiple floors.
