VIDEO: At Milwaukee’s Station 13 in the Metcalfe Park neighborhood, firefighters prepared a Thanksgiving meal together, knowing they might have to respond to emergencies at any moment. Inside the firehouse, a family of six firefighters chopped sweet potatoes, mixed banana pudding filling, and prepped a turkey. Despite not being related, they are bonded through their shared commitment to saving lives with the Milwaukee Fire Department.
“It’s like what you would imagine had a kitchen table with, you know, 6 or 7 of your family members,” Lt. Nicholas Good said. “Like I said, we spend a third of our life with each other, so it’s very easy for us to be with each other on a holiday, just like any other day.”
As they prepared their meal, the firefighters remained ready to respond to any emergency call. “On a holiday like today. There’s been I personally have been on calls on days where we had 20 runs, 20 calls, and then other days where we’ve maybe had maybe 10. So it’s kind of a range between there,” Good said. During the visit to the city’s busiest firehouse, there was gratitude for a peaceful moment.
