VIDEO: Milwaukee firefighters responded to a fire at a downtown apartment building early Friday morning. It started around 6:15 a.m. near 2nd Street and Plankinton Avenue. Residents say they were forced to quickly evacuate. “Definitely a little bit of panic, but it didn’t seem like there was anything super active, high flames or anything,” said resident Matthew Brink. “I was able to at least grab a coat, you know, make sure I was going to be okay before we ran on out.” Crews say the fire began in a small utility closet on the buildingโs fourth floor and was likely caused by an electrical issue. News Chopper 12 flew over the scene, capturing images of residents evacuating and several surrounding streets shut down near the Milwaukee River. Firefighters helped multiple people get out safely and they said there were no injuries.
