City of Janesville holds full-scale emergency preparedness exercise

VIDEO: Rock County Emergency Management and other emergency response agencies came together to conduct a full-scale emergency preparedness exercise. The exercise took place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 6 at Evonik, a specialty chemicals company. The Emergency Operations Center was activated to respond to multiple different scenarios, and crews worked to properly respond to the emergencies.

โ€œThis is just a recognition that there are different hazards that occur, some of them are natural, like a tornado,โ€ said Kevin Lahner, City Manager. โ€œSome of them are manmade type of things.โ€ The simulated environment included the mobilization and deployment of personnel to demonstrate coordination, communication and other emergency response capabilities. Crews will validate plans and build county-wide capabilities to prepare for and respond to hazardous materials incidents. โ€œWhen there is a real emergency, itโ€™s practice like this that makes us better and able to respond when the real things happen,โ€ Lahner said.
