US Forest Service issues update on the flurry of fires burning in Idaho’s Payette National Forest

The U.S. Forest Service reported that lightning started 10 wildfires within five days in the Payette National Forest.

Forest service officials said the fires began between July 31 and Aug. 4 and have burned no more than 2 acres each. Crews have contained all fires except the Tool Cache Fire, which is 70% contained. Meanwhile, fire crews continue battling two larger wildfires. The Forest Service said the Big Bear Fire has burned nearly 15,000 acres and is 50% contained. The Rush Fire has burned more than 7,000 acres and is 90% contained.

The U.S. Forest Service provided a list of the new wildfires below:

  • Sand Fire: 0.5 acres, New Meadows Ranger District. Contained.
  • Hard Creek Fire: 0.1 acres, New Meadows Ranger District. Contained.
  • August Fire: 0.1 acres, Weiser Ranger District. Contained.
  • Pine Creek: 0.1 acres, Council Ranger District. Contained.
  • Hornet Fire: 2 acres, Council Ranger District. Contained.
  • Lonesome Fire: 0.1 acres, New Meadows Ranger District. Contained.
  • Tool Cache Fire: 0.1 acres, Weiser Ranger District. 70% mopped up.
  • Bird Fire: 0.1 acres, New Meadows Ranger District. Contained.
  • Serene Fire: 0.1 acres, New Meadows Ranger District. Contained.
  • Raven Fire: 1.9 acres, Council Ranger District. A Wildland Fire Module is on scene, working towards containment.
