VIDEO: The Texas A&M Forest Service is preparing to host the fifth annual Sisters in Fire event on Saturday, September 27th at the FEMA Dome in Corpus Christi. The program, which runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., invites students in grades 8 through 12 to explore careers in wildland firefighting through hands-on learning.
Over the past four years, Sisters in Fire has traveled to cities across Texas with the goal of introducing young women to fire service careers they may not have considered before.
The event features top female leaders from the Texas A&M Forest Service, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Nature Conservancy, LBJ Wildflower Center and Texas Parks and Wildlife. Throughout the day, students are divided into groups and rotate through stations where they learn about fire engines, bulldozers, chainsaws, and fire culture.
The hope is that through hands-on experience with fun tools and machines, young women will be encouraged to explore careers within the fire service. Organizers are emphasizing that fire service careers extend beyond firefighting roles.
