Springs Fire in California causes evacuations

VIDEO: Three separate brush fires broke out in Lawson Valley on Thursday night, prompting evacuations. The fires โ€” collectively known as the Springs Fire โ€” are burning at a moderate rate of spread in a rural area near Lyons Valley Road and Honey Springs Road. They have scorched a total of 50 acres and are 10% contained, according to Cal Fire San Diego.

Crews were making good progress and stopped one of the fire’s forward rate of spread by 8:45 p.m., the agency said in an X post. The two other fires have merged. Cal Fire Capt. Robert Johnson told NBC 7 that there was no immediate threat to structures. It’s unclear how many structures are impacted by the evacuation orders and warnings.

A night-flying helicopter was still working the fire as of 9 p.m., according to Johnson. Despite it being warm and dry โ€” close to 80 degrees and 15% relative humidity โ€” winds haven’t been too strong throughout the day, making conditions pretty favorable for firefighters, NBC 7 meteorologist Greg Bledsoe explained. The cause of the fires is under investigation.
