VIDEO: Friends of an Oregon Department of Forestry worker are raising money for her recovery expenses, after they said she was seriously hurt — her femur crushed, in addition to other injuries — during a freak accident on Monday.
On Monday, Dana Turner, a wildland firefighter who works as a supervisor at the South Fork Forest Camp in the Tillamook State Forest, was working with her crew, cutting down a 70-foot Noble fir, when it twisted, landing on her leg.
“They put up a bunch of pulleys and they had an excavator out there to keep the tree from smashing on the ground so that they could save all the branches,” said friend Abby Zumwalt, “I mean, everything was set up as it should be, and it was just kind of a freak accident that the tree like started twisting and just came at her.”
ODF confirmed one of their employees was injured during a tree-cutting operation. A spokesperson wrote, “we’re so grateful that they’re doing well and will continue to provide them with whatever support we can.”
