Crews extinguish brush fire near Pennsylvania Turnpike

VIDEO: Firefighters responded to a large brush fire along the Pennsylvania Turnpike on Monday afternoon, according to Cumberland County Team 4400 – NMFC UAS Division.

At about 2 p.m., multiple agencies including the North Middleton Fire Company, Union Fire Company No. 1, Carlisle Fire and Rescue Services and Upper Frankford Township Volunteer Company responded to the incident in the 400 block of McClures Gap Road for a reported combine on fire.

While crews were on scene, the call was upgraded to a brush fire due to strong winds which drove the fire to spread rapidly, firefighters said.

Once additional units arrived, the fire advanced toward a nearby structure which prompted a structure box assignment. An air unit arrived shortly after to provide an aerial overview and situational awareness of the incident.

Crews worked for about two hours to contain and extinguish the fire. Initial assessments showed 22 acres were burnt, but reassessed numbers showed a total of 25.6 acres.
