California and Nevada have joined the Northwest Wildland Fire Protection Agreement, known as the NW Compact.
According to the NW Compact, this collaboration aims to enhance wildfire prevention, suppression, and control across the Northwest U.S. and Western Canada.
Gov. Gavin Newsom of California expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. “California is proud to join forces with our northwestern neighbors to fight catastrophic wildfire,” Newsom said. He highlighted the collective effort to protect communities against the increasing wildfire threats driven by climate change and other factors.
Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo emphasized the importance of partnerships in effective wildfire response. “Safe and effective wildfire response is built on a foundation of partnerships between local, state and federal entities,” Lombardo said. Nevada has witnessed a significant rise in wildfire activity, with an average of 450,000 acres burned annually in recent years.
