Tropical disturbance no threat to Marianas

A tropical disturbance west of Guam is expected to bring heavy rainfall and possible flooding to parts of the Philippines in the coming days but poses no threat to the Marianas or other islands in the region.

Invest 93W, located northwest of Yap, has been struggling to develop but could strengthen into a tropical depression as it approaches the central Philippines, according to Landon Aydlett, warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office Guam.

“93W’s been having a difficult time to develop,” Aydlett said during an interview with The Guam Daily Post Thursday morning. “Most global models do show some modest development in the coming days, but that’s going to be on its approach toward the Philippines.”

The disturbance faces challenges from winter weather patterns to its north, which will limit significant development. However, areas from northern Mindanao, Cebu, and Bohol northward can expect moderate to heavy rainfall and possible flooding as the system moves inland.
