From about 10:30 p.m. Sunday to 2 a.m. Monday, firefighters battled to keep a major fire under control at the Global Recycling Center in Dededo. Multiple tires and vehicles along the main road were on fire and a makeshift structure within the compound was fully engulfed, according to Guam Fire Department spokesman Lt. Nick Garrido.
Garrido said at around 10:33 p.m. Sunday, GFD units responded to the Global Recycling Center on Batulo Street for a reported auto fire. The fire was under control at 2 a.m., Garrido said, adding that all units secured the scene at 5 a.m. Due to heavy smoke and flames, GFD advised residents in the surrounding areas of East Santa Barbara and East San Antonio to consider temporarily evacuating if they feel it is necessary, while crews worked to contain the fire.
GFD had three engine companies on scene, supported by another engine from Joint Region Marianas, and a tanker from Andersen Fire and Emergency Services. “The Guam Fire Department would like to thank Andersen Fire and Emergency Services, Joint Region Marianas, Guam International Airport Authority AARF and the Dededo mayor for their assistance,” Garrido added.
