American Red Cross Guam Chapter: Be fire ready

Home fires remain one of the most common—and most preventable—disasters across the island. The American Red Cross Guam Chapter is reminding families that a few simple precautions can make all the difference when seconds count. Throughout the month of October, the American Red Cross Guam Chapter will be going village to village installing free smoke alarms, testing and replacing batteries in existing alarms, and helping homeowners create escape plans.

The Red Cross is also partnering with the Department of Agriculture and Forestry to raise awareness about wildfire safety across Guam. You can get a head start by taking a few easy safety steps at home. Start by testing your smoke alarms every month and replacing the batteries at least once a year. Make sure alarms are installed in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of your home. If an alarm sounds, get out immediately and stay out—never go back inside a burning home.

Next, create and practice a two-minute escape plan. Everyone in your household should know at least two ways out of every room and a safe meeting spot outside. Practice your plan regularly so that even children and elders know what to do in an emergency. The Red Cross Guam Chapter continues to support island residents through its Sound the Alarm campaign, installing free smoke alarms and teaching families how to stay safe from home fires.
