4th case of whooping cough confirmed on Guam this year

A fourth case of whooping cough or pertussis has been confirmed on Guam this year, the Department of Public Health and Social Services said on Tuesday. Public Health received one new laboratory-confirmed Bordetella pertussis report on Oct. 13. โ€œThis is the fourth confirmed pertussis case for 2025. Epidemiologic case investigation and contact tracing have been initiated to determine the source of the exposure,โ€ Public Health said.

Of the three previous cases, one was a 3-month-old unvaccinated child. That was the second case involving unvaccinated children since the start of the year. Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, is a vaccine-preventable disease. Public Health is encouraging the public to ensure they are up to date with their vaccines. Individuals experiencing flu or pertussis-like symptoms are encouraged to contact their primary care provider.
