West Virginia honors fallen firefighters with proclamation by Gov. Morrisey

VIDEO: Every day they go to work, firefighters are risking their lives to save our lives. And for Benny Filiaggi, he was no different.

โ€œHe did what he loved,โ€ his wife Stephanie said. “He would have had it no other way.โ€

Filiaggi passed away in 2024 from a heart attack while serving as chief of the Montgomery Fire Department. His son Michael serves as assistant chief and said not a day goes by where he doesnโ€™t think of his father and former chief.

โ€œIt was an honor to learn from the best,โ€ Michael said. “Theyโ€™re big shoes to fill. Iโ€™ll never be able to fill them, but I try every day.โ€

The Filiaggis, along with the Berkeley County Fire Department and War Volunteer Fire Department, honored their fallen brothers Lieutenant Jeremy Taylor and assistant chief Jeffery Dale Lawson, who died within the past year, with a ceremony at the Capitol Complex.
