Local, state and federal crews battle wildfire in Pendleton County

PHOTOS: Emergency personnel said multiple agencies have worked hours to extinguish a wildfire in southwest Pendleton County.

The blaze reported near Cherry Grove Wednesday afternoon is mostly affecting land within the Monongahela National Forest, according to the Pendleton County Office of Emergency Management.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, the blaze has affected about 50 acres of land and has been about 30% contained.

Officials said multiple volunteer fire departments along with the W.Va. Division of Forestry and U.S. Forest Service have responded to the area.

First responders said suppression efforts have been complicated by steep terrain and gusty winds that have blown down trees.

The USFS said smoke may be visible in Circleville, Thornwood and along Route 28.
