One of Lewis County’s essential institutions has now been in business for half a century.
The Weston-Lewis County Ambulance Service Authority, doing business as Lewis County EMS, is celebrating 50 years of service this month.
The organization wants to spend the month thanking their community for their continued support, said James “J.T.” Taylor, EMS director.
“I thought it would be nice to say thank you to the community,” he said. “They’ve been supporting us for 50 years and we plan on being here for another 50 years and beyond. We’re trying to strive, keep up with the times and modernize health care.”
Lewis County EMS got its start as part of the local fire department before receiving the funding to become their own organization, Taylor said.
“We’ve just grown over the years,” he said. “We’ve gone from being strictly volunteers to having all paid staff now. We had support from the city until about the 1980s, and the county has supported us all 50 years.”
