Construction begins on major fire department renovation project in Charleston

VIDEO: Construction is now underway on fire stations in Charleston that are getting a makeover.

โ€œThe renovations are unbelievable,โ€ Local Union President and Capt. Austin Smith said.

Charleston Mayor Amy Goodwin said the $4.5 million project is officially underway, and the upgrades will modernize some of the stations by adding a kitchen, bathrooms, gym and study area.

Goodwin added that every stationโ€™s upgrade depends on need.

โ€œItโ€™s our commitment to making sure we are taking care of our fire department and to the amazing men and women who work on your behalf every day,โ€ Goodwin said.

Firefighters said they are most excited for the individual living quarters that will be installed department-wide.

โ€œTo have individual rooms is really wonderful,โ€ Smith said. โ€œItโ€™s a luxury many of us have never experienced.โ€

Fire Chief Craig Matthews said the renovations will happen in a tiered process with only some stations getting major upgrades like station seven, four and two.
