VIDEO: Construction is now underway on fire stations in Charleston that are getting a makeover.
โThe renovations are unbelievable,โ Local Union President and Capt. Austin Smith said.
Charleston Mayor Amy Goodwin said the $4.5 million project is officially underway, and the upgrades will modernize some of the stations by adding a kitchen, bathrooms, gym and study area.
Goodwin added that every stationโs upgrade depends on need.
โItโs our commitment to making sure we are taking care of our fire department and to the amazing men and women who work on your behalf every day,โ Goodwin said.
Firefighters said they are most excited for the individual living quarters that will be installed department-wide.
โTo have individual rooms is really wonderful,โ Smith said. โItโs a luxury many of us have never experienced.โ
Fire Chief Craig Matthews said the renovations will happen in a tiered process with only some stations getting major upgrades like station seven, four and two.
