State officials urge fireworks safety ahead of July 4 celebrations

As families across Washington prepare for Fourth of July celebrations, state officials are urging residents to prioritize safety when it comes to fireworks. Fireworks continue to pose a significant risk during holiday festivities. According to the Washington State Fire Marshal’s office, in 2024 alone, Washington State reported 156 fireworks-related injuries and 271 fires, with the majority occurring on Independence Day. While public fireworks displays are the safest option, many still choose to light fireworks at home. The State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office is reminding residents to take precautions if they plan to use fireworks on their own.

Officials emphasize the importance of using only legal consumer-grade fireworks and having safety tools like a water bucket or hose nearby in case of fire. Children should never be allowed to handle fireworks, and all flammable materials should be kept out of reach. Residents are also cautioned against using any fireworks that appear damaged or altered. Alcohol and fireworks are a dangerous combination and should never be mixed. Fireworks should never be pointed at people, and users should retreat immediately after lighting fuses to avoid injury. Even seemingly harmless items like sparklers can cause severe burns, with temperatures reaching over 1,000 degrees.
