Smoke detector saves family in Hoquiam house fire

VIDEO: A family of three escaped injury from a house fire Sunday morning thanks to a working smoke detector, according to the Hoquiam Fire Department. Firefighters responded to the one-story residential structure fire at 8:30 a.m. On arrival, heavy smoke and flames were visible from the home.

The first alarm assignment included two engines and a medic unit from Hoquiam, along with one engine, one medic unit and a battalion chief from the Aberdeen Fire Department. Two Hoquiam fire chiefs also responded to the scene. The initial crew made a transitional attack from the outside before moving to an interior attack once appropriate resources arrived. The fire was extinguished approximately five minutes later.

Two adults and one child were alerted by their smoke detector and safely evacuated before firefighters arrived, according to officials. No injuries were reported. An investigation into the cause of the fire is being conducted by the Hoquiam Fire Department and Hoquiam Police Department.
