Seattle’s 2-alarm Beacon Hill garage fire that spread to home noted as suspicious

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Seattle Fire Department (SFD) crews are battled a fire in a detached garage that spread to a two-story home. The fist calls about the fire in the 2300 block of 17th Ave S in the north Beacon Hill neighborhood came in at 5:21 a.m. Thursday. The garage had a living space above it that was under construction. The first crew to arrive reported the fire enveloped the entire garage and spread to the home. They quickly put water on the flames, searched the home, and no one was found inside.

At 5:30 a.m., the response was upgraded to a 2-alarm fire to summon more resources to fight the fire and evacuate affected homes. The Seattle Fire Department (SFD) said the high heat from the garage fire damaged a nearby utility pole, causing power lines to hang low. A few cars parked in an alley were scorched, and the fire also damaged a neighboring shed. SFD said 70 to 80 firefighters responded and were able to get the fire under control by 5:39 a.m. No one was hurt.

SFD said the cause of the fire is “undetermined” but was noted to be suspicious because no obvious ignition sources — such as electrical issues – were found. On Wednesday, two fires were ruled to be arson. One occurred at a funeral home in Columbia City. Another happened at a home under construction in the Mount Baker neighborhood. It is not yet known if the two fires are connected. A $10,000 reward is offered in connection with the fire.
