Residents displaced after house fire in rural Benton County

The residents of a rural home northwest of Prosser have been displaced after a fire that started on their back porch Sunday evening scorched their house and made it uninhabitable, West Benton firefighter said.

According to West Benton Fire and Rescue, at about 5:08 p.m. on December 7, firefighters heard a report of a house on fire on Missimer Road northwest of Prosser. Firefighters said they arrived at about 5:16 p.m. to find flames coming from the rear of the home. Firefighters said crews were able to quickly stop the spread of the fire.

WBFR officials said that although the fire was quickly put out, the house suffered extensive damage from fire, smoke and water. The residents of the house were not home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. The house has been deemed uninhabitable, and the residents are being assisted with temporary housing.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated. Firefighters said the fire is believed to have started on the rear porch, where a heat lamp had been in use.
