Police seek arsonist after 8 fires set in South Seattle

VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Seattle Police Department (SPD) is investigating a string of fires set by an arsonist in South Seattle. On Friday at 12:13 a.m. a suspect described as wearing dark clothing started setting fires starting at 22nd Ave S and South Hill Street, according to the SPD. Fires continued to be set southbound, with the last one set at South Walden Street and Wetmore Avenue South.

One of the fires involved flames on the porch of a home along South Mount Baker Boulevard, near Franklin High School. Fortunately, the fire did not spread into the home, and the Seattle Fire Department reported that everyone evacuated safely with no injuries.

Eight fires of varying sizes were set in about an hour. A King County deputy arrived with a police dog and tried to track the suspect, but no one was found. Some of the fires were set in dumpsters and a car. The SPD Arson and Bomb Squad was notified, and the Fire Marshal’s Office investigation unit, Marshal 5, was briefed.
